Why a 1962 Skyhawk is one of the best airplanes in the world to learn in

When you train with Harvey Aviation, you won't be handed whatever airplane happens to be free that day off a rental line. You'll learn in one specific airplane — my 1962 Cessna 172C, tail number N8424X — and you'll come to know it the way pilots are meant to know their aircraft. Let me introduce you.

I'm Barrett, a flight instructor, and the owner of this airplane. I fly it, I maintain it, and I know its history. That matters more than most new students realize.

A little history: the airplane that taught the world to fly

The Cessna 172 is the most-produced airplane in aviation history, and for good reason. First built in 1956, it took the rugged Cessna 170 and swapped the tailwheel for tricycle landing gear — a nosewheel out front — which made it far easier to land and earned it a reputation as the friendliest trainer in the sky. More people have earned their wings in a 172 than in any other airplane ever made.

N8424X is a 172C, the 1962 model. That year Cessna made a handful of changes pilots appreciated: a key starter replaced the old pull-starter, the seats became six-way adjustable, and an autopilot became available as an option. Only 889 of this exact model were built. It's a genuine piece of aviation history that still does its job beautifully more than sixty years later.

What's under the cowl

N8424X is powered by a Continental O-300 — a 145-horsepower, six-cylinder, air-cooled engine. Six cylinders is a little unusual for a trainer (most later 172s moved to a four-cylinder Lycoming), and the payoff is how smooth it runs. It isn't a fast airplane, and that's the point: a relaxed cruise of roughly 110 to 120 mph gives a new pilot time to think, plan, and stay ahead of the airplane instead of chasing it.

Why it's a great airplane to learn in

•       Forgiving and honest. It's stable, with gentle manners and predictable stall behavior. The airplane tells you what it's doing.

•       Excellent visibility. The high wing gives you a clear view of the ground below — a real help when you're learning to judge landings.

•       Simple systems. There's nothing complicated to distract you from the fundamentals. You learn to fly first, the right way.

•       The skills transfer. Learn in a 172 and you can step into nearly any light airplane afterward. It's the industry's universal trainer for a reason.

The part the big schools can't offer: it's mine

I know this airframe intimately. I took it through its annual inspection just this spring, right down to the brake pads and brake lines. I know its quirks, its history, and exactly how it's been maintained, because I'm the one who maintains it. When your instructor knows the airplane that well, you learn faster and you fly safer. That's a consistency and a level of care a rental line simply can't match.
